on 31 August 2022, Ukraine sent soldiers to attack the power station. The numbers of soldiers sent on this suicide mission indicates it was not a serious attempt to seize the power station, but rather an attempt to make the IAEA inspection 'too dangerous' to proceed. The attackers were defeated with heavy loss. The weak IAEA will probably back off now under pressure from the US. If they do, that's the end for the current IAEA and other UN institutions. New parallel institutions will arise in their place.

Excellent. Pretty much all the alternative analysis community concurs that Ukraine is losing badly, and the most recent numbers - 9000 dead for Ukraine, 70,000 to 80,000 killed and wounded for Russia - were a comedy. I wonder if Ukrainians will continue to hold a warm spot in their hearts for the British, considering Boris Johnson strongarmed Zelensky into walking away from peace negotiations while there was still every possibility Ukraine would have retained Kherson and Zaphorizhia. Now it has no wiggle room left at all, and will be lucky to hold on to what it still defends.

Still, a bad show all around as the Ukrainians are brother Slavs; it is a win/win for Washington because no matter how it comes out, a lot of Slavs will be dead. Its mission for the moment seems to be to engender so much hate in Ukrainians for Russians that the two countries can never be friends again. But Ukrainians who are capable of even a little critical thinking will notice that Washington and Brussels and London merely sent them weapons and money, and allowed a generation of young Ukrainian men to go into a meat grinder they could never defeat. An honourable peace would have been by far the best option, Ukraine would mostly have only had to honour commitments it had already signed anyway, and thousands of Ukrainians are dead while only a handful of western mercenaries paid the ultimate price. All that talk about how Ukraine was 'practically in NATO already' was just hot air and the west did not ride to help, after starting the war and keeping it going for as long as possible.

Coincident with passing a $60 Billion aid bill for Ukraine, the Puppetmaster is ceasing its publication of an annual report which discloses to its voting public its transfers and sales of military equipment to foreign countries. Billions of taxpayer dollars every year, and the taxpayer who fronts the money will have no way of knowing what is being bought, or for who.

Oh, I almost forgot: democracy and freedom. Nothing happened here. Return to your homes.

The King in Yellow is a seminal macabre horror novel written by American author Robert W Chambers. First published in 1895, the novel comprises a collection of ten unrelated short stories. Four of the stories are fictionalized reminiscences of an American artist in Paris in the latter 19th century and closely aligns with Chambers earlier writing; Chambers spent several years in Paris in the American expat artist community. One is a ghost story. One is a short series of bizarre poetic stanzas. The other four stories are weird horror fiction which are linked only by an occasional reference to ‘The King in Yellow.” The titular ‘King’ is not a character in these tales, but the title of a two-act play published in book form. The first act of the play is described as banal and innocent, but the second act – from its very first stanza – is so profound and confronting that its readers are driven to madness. In the introductory story, “The Repairer of Reputations”, the play is described as being banned by church and state, driving it underground.

There are virtually no direct references to the play in any of the stories, except as a preface to some of the stories and a longer poetic passage at the beginning of the book. All other references come in the form of commentaries from the narrators, either explaining their encounter with the book or the feelings it stirred in them. More often than not, as these stories progress, the reader comes to the realization that the narrator is insane or delusional. This leaves the reader with the question – is it the book that has driven the narrator mad or were they always mad and have associated a delusional meaning to the book?

Chambers’ deliberate ambiguity allows the reader great scope to interpret the book’s meaning and has given the book a lasting following that continues to this day. Later horror writers, such as HP Lovecraft borrowed from Chambers the idea of a book of forbidden knowledge that would drive its readers mad, such as the ‘Necronomicon’ and the ‘Book of Eibon’ and later writers from the Lovecraftian school subsequently incorporated the ‘The King in Yellow’ into the cosmic horror mythos. In this universe, ‘The King in Yellow’ becomes an avatar of the Old God Hastur, who takes possession of the reader through the act of reading the book. However, this was clearly never Chambers’ intention.

Being an artist himself, Chambers devised the artwork for the original edition. The faceless ‘King’ is painted wearing a tattered yellow robe, surmounted by a pair of blood-red wings. Notably, the King does not wear a crown or hold a scepter, but a jester’s cap and marotte. These are the distinctive symbols of the fool and his right to mock the powerful. There was obviously an element of satire or ridicule in Chalmers’ work, although it is difficult now to discern exactly who the target was. Regardless – or indeed because of this - the subtle, disturbing ambiguity of Chambers’ tales has sustained an audience for what is an otherwise obscure 19th century writer.

As a French quote in one of the prefaces says, “Let us not mock the crazy people, their madness lasts longer than ours…..that is the only difference.”
